Spring Sports

T.Gillespie

Boys Track Team

Soccer, golf and track have been underway for a couple of weeks now, and although the weather hasn’t always been cooperative, it has been exciting seeing students practicing and competing. We have six teams competing this spring in sports. Our coaches are all delighted that competition is thriving this year, as compared to last year when spring sports were totally shut down due to Covid.

Girls Track Coach Gail Hartigan states “It has been awesome to get back to the track, watching competition, and seeing the girls grow after a year off! We are still working on our best line-ups, working through a few injuries, and hoping for the best come conference, regional, and state. If we can get to full strength, with no more injuries, and compete well it should be a lot of fun! Every year I look forward to strategizing the line-up to do our best at the end of the season. We are a team with great potential and it is always fun to see who is willing to work and surprise me by doing something BETTER than I expected.”

Thad Nelson, Boys Golf Coach states “We are really excited to be able to compete this spring. There are over 20 boys playing golf, and we are off to a nice start to the season. The leadership from our seniors, Trevor Casey, Dawson Goss, Joey Konz, and Jackson Juelsgaard has helped get us off to a quality start this season. One great thing about having so many out for golf is we have great competition in practice and during meets. Players are competing for roster spots and working hard every day. From a coaching perspective, it has been really neat to see the progress of the returning players after not getting to work with them last year. The amount of growth in their game in those two years has been tremendous.”

Tara Wilkie, Girls Golf Coach, says “Excited to be back for 2021! We have a great squad of Varsity and JV girls playing this year. As a team, we are looking to become WIC Conference champs in both season-long play and the WIC 18-hole tournament in Atlantic on May 5. Our girls finished 1st place on April 1 at the Council Bluffs Invitational with a team score of 201 --- a great score against 10 other good teams!  Individually, we have 2 standout girls playing this year --- sophomore Brooklynn Currin and Junior Maddie Lewis. Both girls are currently shooting scores ranking them in the top 10 individuals for Class 2A, and have finished 1st and 2nd in almost every meet.  A fantastic accomplishment!  With the help of juniors Keely Smith and Andi Piittmann, we have a shot at pulling together a team round to get us into the state tournament June 1 & 2.  Maddie, Brooklynn, Keely, and Andi, along with Allison Black and Sara Hudgell, return from 2019, and are making the newcomers of Grace Abbott, Grace Alff, Mia Harter, and Lea Altic feel welcome!  Each player is showing great improvement with each practice and competition. With no seniors on the roster, our future this year and in years to come is bright!  The girls work hard in school and on the course to make this team focused, flexible, and, most of all, fun!”

Girls Soccer Coach Shane Jacobsen writes “I am so proud of this team! They work hard and are very coachable.  The best thing is that the team's chemistry is amazing.  Hopefully these things will take us far! It is early in the season but these girls have shown that they can play!  I think everyone is so happy that we get to play this year!  It would have been a crime to miss this year!”

Jeff Koenck, Boys Track Coach, says “Going into the season we didn’t want to focus on the negative of not having a season last year. Rather, we wanted to take the opportunity and make the best of this year since we feel fortunate to have a season. At our first meet at Dowling Catholic, we did not go in with the mindset to win the event; we just wanted to focus on competing at a high level and making sure we did the little things correctly.  However, after winning that meet, it’s now become more of our focus to win meets. We are four meets in and are 4-time champions.

As a program, we put our focus first on Drake Relays. Right now, a day before the cutoff, we have 7 events that will qualify. Currently, those athletes/events are Sid Schaaf in 110 high hurdles and 400 low hurdles. Sid also qualified for the 100 and 400, but he can only compete in 4 events and he is also in two of the qualifying relay teams. Noah James has qualified in the 110 high hurdles, 400 low hurdles, and high jump. The 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams have also qualified.  After the Drake Relays, which is Thursday, April 22nd, our focus will turn to repeating as WIC champions and then on to the state qualifying meet, which will be hosted in Treynor on May 13th. While there has been a lot of early season success, the best thing so far is how well the team supports each other and how cohesive the team chemistry is.”

Boys Soccer Coach Jason Macintosh adds "It has been amazing to get back on the pitch this season. We are very young this season with only 5 players returning that have ever played high school soccer before Covid struck. We have the most talent that we have ever had, now in our 7th season since Treynor added soccer to the program. With 2 seniors leading the way, in Keaton Mann and Duncan Clark, this squad is going to achieve amazing things this year. I cannot wait to see the progress and successes of this squad in June with our sights set on Des Moines."

Check the Activities Calendar to make plans to come watch our talented athletes while the season is still in session.
