Meet Mr. Hedger
New HS Principal
Mr. Jacob Hedger started in his role as Treynor High School Principal on June 1, 2020. He comes to us from another Western Iowa Conference school, Logan-Magnolia and brings over 20 years of educational experience with him. He had served as counselor for 7th-12th grade students since August 2012, and prior to that he was the 7-12 social studies teacher from August 1999 to 2012, all at Logan Magnolia.
While at Logan, he developed and maintained a comprehensive counseling program, highlights of which include a course designed for success after high school, hosting a college fair, multiple social learning opportunities and numerous academic success activities. He was an active member of the district leadership team, which was responsible for implementing the shared vision and mission as well as helping to ensure highly effective teaching practices and maintaining a quality-learning environment for students. Mr. Hedger was also a leading member of the district Crisis Management Team and co-leader of the secondary building Teacher Assistance Team (TAT) which works with struggling and at-risk students to help ensure success. Additionally, he has prepared for and led several professional development opportunities that included learning on poverty and the brain, school safety, building student relationships and student mental heath supports. Serving as a Secondary 504 Coordinator, Level I Investigator, Homeless Liaison and Equity Coordinator rounds out his extensive background.
Mr. Hedger is actively involved with community and church. He serves as an elder for Logan Christian Church, overseeing church functions, policies and activities. He has also been a volunteer and paid coach for several youth and high school sports programs, coaching baseball, basketball, track, volleyball and wrestling. He believes that creating a culture of learning and development will help participants to thrive. In addition, he is a volunteer as a mentor for the Teammates Mentoring Program, meeting on a weekly basis with two elementary students. This supports his belief that building relationships can be key to helping students achieve their potential in school and in life.
Mr. Hedger's education comes from Buena Vista, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in 7-12 Business Education with a minor in American History and Psychology; Creighton University where he earned his Master's Degree in K-12 School Counseling; and Wayne State College where he completed coursework that led to his licensure as a PK-12 school principal in both Iowa and Nebraska.
Mr. Hedger was selected as the 2019 Iowa ACAC High School Counselor of the Year for his innovative efforts and contributions for helping students pursue their post-secondary goals.
Mr. Hedger is married to his wife of 21 years, Chris Hedger. Chris is an administrator of a long-term care facility in Southwest Iowa. Together they have two children. Alivia is a sophomore at UNO and is double majoring in elementary and special education. Josef is a senior at Logan Magnolia and is active in baseball, football, wrestling and track, as well as National Honor Society and choir/show choir.
When applying for this position, Mr. Hedger stated "Receiving a high quality education is one of the greatest factors in helping people achieve excellence in their life. When the educational experience is a positive experience, where the student, guardians, educational staff, teachers, administrators, and educational system work collectively, excellence can be expected and achieved by everyone. It is with this thought in mind that I have chosen to pursue the opportunity to be the high school principal for Treynor Community School District".
Welcome to Treynor, Mr. Hedger - we are lucky to have you!
