Service Learning Day at ODM

ODM

Opening Ceremony

Treynor Middle and High School students spent the day Friday, March 6th at Open Door Mission as part of the yearly service learning project. Students and teachers were all welcomed by President & CEO, Candace Gregory, who led a talk on "Understanding the Framework of Homelessness and Poverty". Next, the students were split into groups for a campus tour and their projects.

Sixth grade students were responsible for cleaning out vans, washing windows, making Easter decorations for Lydia House, and cleaning up project areas. Seventh graders were responsible for making sandwiches and sack lunches and helping with lunch service and clean-up of the cafeteria. Eighth grade students volunteered at Timberlake Outreach Center. They emptied, washed & restocked shelves, sorted books, washed down walls and chairs, sorted and restocked the bedding/luggage area, sorted toys and shoes and hung clothes. They also sorted and organized incoming personal care items and other donations.

Ninth grade students sorted canned food items for Manna Pantry, cleaning the cans and checking for expiration dates. Sophomores were responsible for computer recycling, garden prepping, mulching and the toy inventory. Junior girls went to Lydia House and deep cleaned the Bright Space, restocked shelves with toys & books and reorganized classrooms. They also sorted and organized clothing closets and restocked personal care room. The Junior boys were tasked with a lot of cleaning. Senior students paired up with Open Door Mission students and took a trip to the zoo for the day.

Student feedback on this day is always positive. Some say it's their favorite day of the year. Others have said it has led to volunteering at the Mission outside of school. Candace Gregory states that this day equates to over 1800 hours of service, which is equivalent to 70 full-time employees. She appreciates the quality and quantity of work that comes from Treynor students and staff serving on this day. 3NewsNow was there to capture some highlights of the day. Watch their segment here.

In addition, items were collected for the Open Door Mission leading up to this day. Collected from MS & HS students and staff were: 200 tubes of deoderant, 485 chapsticks, 336 pair of socks and 75 other toiletry items. Thank you to all who donated!
